Boat-shaped vs. column buoys: where each one belongs
A boat-shaped buoy is not the "upgraded" version. It is a form developed for fast current and large water-level variation. In calm water it offers no advantage and costs some of the all-round conspicuity a column hull gives you.
1. Current loading and heel angle
The hydrodynamic load on a moored buoy rises roughly with the projected area and with the square of current speed. Double the current and the load rises close to fourfold — which is why a column hull that behaves perfectly well in calm water suddenly sits at a large angle in a fast reach.
Heel has two immediate consequences. The lantern's optical axis tilts away from its design plane, cutting effective range at night. And the mooring load changes direction, raising the chance of dragging.
A boat-shaped hull reduces the projected area presented to the flow and places the buoyancy and load centres more favourably, so the same current produces noticeably less heel. That is the real reason it gets specified on fast inland and canal reaches.
2. Water-level variation and freeboard
Where levels vary widely — canals and regulated reaches especially — chain length is set for the highest water. As the level falls, the surplus chain lets the hull wander over a wider watch circle. As it rises, insufficient chain pulls the hull down, freeboard shrinks sharply, and in the worst case the buoy is drawn under.
Boat-shaped hulls generally carry more reserve buoyancy and a gentler buoyancy-versus-draught curve, so they tolerate level change better and leave more margin when the mooring is designed.
3. Dragging and lay-over risk
Dragging is rarely as simple as "the sinker was too light". More often it is caused by cyclic loading: the hull works back and forth under current and waves, the chain applies intermittent horizontal pull to the sinker, and over time the sinker walks off its position.
A hull that heels less and works less also pulls less on the sinker. So the advantage of the boat-shaped form is not that it "looks steadier" — it is a measurable reduction in how many times a year a mark has to be repositioned.
4. When a column buoy is still the better answer
Do not treat boat-shaped as the default. A column hull is more sensible where:
- Current is moderate. The hydrodynamic advantage is unused, and the extra cost buys nothing.
- All-round conspicuity matters. A column hull presents the same shape and colour from every bearing; a boat-shaped hull has a definite fore-and-aft axis and reads differently from ahead than from abeam.
- A high focal plane is required. Column hulls carry the lantern higher without adding much windage.
- Fleet standardisation matters. Fewer hull types on one waterway means significantly less burden on spares and tooling.
5. Decision order
- Get the two numbers first: design current and water-level range for the reach.
- Fast current and wide level range → evaluate boat-shaped. Moderate current and stable level → column is usually enough.
- Then check conspicuity requirements: is all-round consistency needed, and what focal height is specified?
- Finally, recalculate the mooring for the chosen form. Do not carry over the chain and sinker sizing from the previous batch.
In practice a single waterway often uses both — boat-shaped through fast reaches and bridge areas, column hulls on calm stretches and in anchorages. That is normal; there is no need to standardise the whole line on one form.
